Long before Easter I was contacted by Bionade Australia about their organic and healthier version of soda, a product that has long been available in Germany but has only just recently come to Australia.
When I first received the email I was hesitant; I don’t actually drink soft drink/soda except for sparkling water and ginger beer on occasion, so I was reluctant to receive samples of anything that I didn’t actually agree with or want to consume. I expressed my concerns via reply email, being honest that it’s not the type of thing I like to consume so perhaps I’m not the best person to do a review.
It was refreshing that the company were so understanding, and in response they gave me a list of the ingredients and more information about how the drinks are made:
- 100% organic in both production and ingredients
- Brewed like beer (a natural process) without alcohol
- Low in sugar
- Nothing artificial (colours, flavours, preservatives).
Given this information, I decided I would give it a go, expecting that I would receive a sample of perhaps one of each of the five flavours (Elderberry, Ginger-Orange, Cola, Lychee and Herbs). Generously, Drinks-Beverage-Logistics sent me an entire case of Bionade, with several of each flavour. Suffice it to say, it’s taken me a while to get through them all!
So what do I think? Well, I must admit, I have been pleasantly surprised by these beverages. I took a few away at Easter time to my family’s shack at the Murray River, and while everyone else was knocking back beers, I enjoyed sitting in the sun or out on the boat sipping on my Ginger-Orange Bionade. My family all tried it and thought it was great, with my brother also stating “it’s not that unhealthy and it looks like you’re drinking a beer like everyone else, great way to fly under the radar.”
Thanks to the way the drink is brewed, Bionade does give off the sensation of drinking a beer (albeit a light, fruity style beer). It’s refreshing without giving you a sugar rush or the craving to keep drinking more, and it’s relatively guilt-free; the perfect accompaniment to a family holiday in the sun, a BBQ or other social gathering where you don’t feel like drinking alcohol but want something with a bit more kick than water.
